Meet Little Miss “If Only”, Creativity Serial Killer

Sometimes it seems like there are so many enemies to you being able to create freely that you may as well give up and never bother again. This is usually because they all seem to merge together like some phantom army, attacking you relentlessly from all directions before you even realise where you are or what’s going on.

But when you’re able to step back from the carnage and see this apparently vast force you’re under fire from, you can see that once separated, and brought out from the shadows, they are far less frightening.

One of these creativity killers we’re going to refer to as Little Miss If Only…

Little Miss If Only is that voice in your head that, just as you think you might be ready to begin a new creative project, whispers things like: “If only you had more time, you could be so much more creative. It’s not really worth starting anything unless you’ve got at least 3 whole days free is it? You’ll never get anywhere.”

Or: “If only you had the right materials. Yes, these 17 different journals are beautiful, but none of them are quite right to begin writing in for this new project are they? Probably better you wait until you find one that IS perfect.”

Or: “If only you had some good ideas to begin with. You know, those kind of ideas that just pop out of your head perfectly formed and need very little additional creative input to become instant masterpieces. Then you could be creative.”

I’m sure you get the idea.

Little Miss If Only is constantly telling how creative you could be, if only certain conditions were in place. And, by that she is implying that if all of those conditions aren’t perfect, then there’s no way you’ll be able to be at your most creative, so why even bother to start anything?

One by one, she kills your big creative plans, then cackles as she watches you turn away, defeated and disillusioned.

The fact is, the conditions to create will never be perfect. It’s impossible. To be creative, we need to step up regularly, every day, many times a day and just try. The more often you do, the easier it becomes.

Whatever armies stand in front of you, including Little Miss If Only, you can defeat them. By showing up and creating the best you can, as often as you can.

You owe it to yourself, you owe it to the rest of us. Rise up, create, we’re with you.
